Our Purpose

Preparing for an NHS consultant interview requires candidates to demonstrate not only clinical expertise, but also a comprehensive understanding of leadership, governance, NHS policy, quality improvement, and the wider healthcare system. Despite this, the information needed to prepare is often dispersed across multiple sources

This resource was created by a recently appointed NHS consultant to bring together the key information required for consultant interview preparation into a single, accessible platform. It provides a free, comprehensive guide to the topics most commonly explored at interview, helping candidates prepare efficiently and with confidence.

After the commitment and dedication required to complete specialist training, preparing for your consultant interview should be straightforward. Our mission is to make high-quality interview preparation easily accesible, giving every candidate access to the knowledge and guidance they need to succeed.

The Pathway

Step 1

Draft your CV

Write your first draft CV, identify any gaps in your experience, and start tailoring your training to fill them.

Step 2

Target your trusts
Build a shortlist of where you'd like to work as a consultant. For each, find out what they look for in a candidate, when they typically advertise consultant posts, and make early contact.

Step 3

Application process

Your interview date must fall within 6 months of your CCT date — but you can apply well before that, as long as the interview itself lands within that window. Work backwards from your CCT date to plan when to start applying.

Step 4

Prepare for the Interview

Start your interview prep early. Browse our guidance below for practical tips on how to prepare — and how to give yourself the best chance of excelling

Our Reviews

Helped guide me through my last few years of training, knowing the process well, she encouraged me to start early on my CV, carefully teasing out noteworthy events and experiences over many years of postgraduate training! From the moment I started looking at job opportunities she was (somehow magically/by some crazy stroke of luck) there, providing guidance on how to maximise precious time with potential employers - asking the right questions to learn the most about teams/trusts that then set me up perfectly for subsequent job applications. Timed interview practice sessions were invaluable, teaching me structured answers, consultant level thinking and giving me the knowledge and confidence to be successful at my dream job and first substantive interview.
